New report on burden of osteoporosis in Europe

Landmark report published by the International Osteoporosis Foundation in cooperation with EFPIA reveals the immense burden of osteoporotic fractures and identifies a serious treatment gap in Europe. The report shows that the economic burden of fractures in Europe is far higher than previously estimated.

Data compiled from Europe's five largest countries plus Sweden show:

* 280 new fractures every hour, resulting in 2.46 million fractures in 2010;

* 34,000 deaths caused by fractures annually (80 per day) - 49% following hip fractures;

* Large gap between the number of people who are treated compared to the number who are eligible for treatment based on fracture risk;

* Treatment gap, inadequate implementation of national osteoporosis guidelines and poor adherence to therapy result in low treatment uptake;

* With increased treatment uptake, 13% of the projected increase in fractures
and 20% of the projected increase in lost QALYs could be cost-effectively avoided.
